details ~ velvet & linen

With the steady demise of shelter magazines ~ House & Garden, House Beautiful, Southern Accents, In Style Home, Blueprint, Home, Cottage Living, O at Home, Country Home & Domino have all have been shuttered ~ art & design blogs are brilliantly filling the void. When one starts a blog & embarks its learning curve & daily time commitment, the beginning months are all about creating quality ~ hopefully ~ content that will attract a loyal & growing readership. And, if we are perfectly honest, we are constantly benchmarking our efforts against the blog leaders in our niche. I have my daily reads ~ decor8, design*sponge, apartment therapy to name just a few, who are all widely considered to be best in class. I would be lying if I said to join them was not my dream.

The best way to find new blogs is to click on a respected blog’s blogroll ~ you can see my own growing blogroll by clicking on the friends button on the left. I recently found velvet & linen, the blog of LA designer, Brooke Giannetti. Brooke & her architect husband, Steve, own Giannetti Home & regularly collaborate on design projects together.

Brooke recently celebrated her blog’s 1 year “bloggy-versary”. With Brooke’s blog, I did something I have never done before which was go back to her first post & scan/read everything sequentially as it was written. Usually with a blog, you read the current stuff, possibly surf around in it a little & then decide if it is something that is valuable enough to you to to take the time to revisit either daily or from time-to-time. Since I have only been blogging for 4 months & have been focusing more on content than promotion, I was curious about several things ~ how a blog author takes their vision & develops their blogging voice, how their focus may change over time as their experience grows or their passions or taste evolves & how they create their community.

Brooke’s blog is absolutely beautiful & she has amazing taste. I like the personal glimpses she gives her readers of her family life & awesome marriage & partnership with Steve.

So, what did I learn after really delving into Brooke’s blog the way I did. That she is really talented ~ ditto for Steve. That not only does your blogging voice grow stronger over time, but your point of view gets more focused. That I need to get over my blog need to be perfect before starting to reach out to my fellow bloggers ~ blogs are forever being tweaked, improved & even redesigned. That to develop a community, I need to do much more than just read & write. Oh, the last thing i learned is that referencing my life & personal design choices more will bring a new dimension to my work on style is in the details.

staging ~ the 3ds

I was getting my usual Sunday morning HGTV real estate fix a few days ago when Sofie Allsopp, host of The Unsellables, spoke of what she calls the “3ds” of getting your home ready to be placed on the market ~
* dis-associate
* de-clutter
* de-personalize
I use another “d” for her first one ~ detach ~ & wrote about all 3 of these concepts here.

When selling, it is important to appeal to the largest buyer pool that you can. To further illustrate the “3ds” in action, let us dissect this MLS picture of a kitchen.

This kitchen, though lacking the high-end finishes that buyers crave like stainless & granite, is actually fairly modern & spacious & has some nice features in it like the window. But, obviously, the owner did not implement the “3ds”.

There is way too stuff in this space & all this stuff distracts potential buyers from seeing its actual features. Some serious editing needs to happen, starting with everything north of the top of the cabinets (what are those 5 frond shaped things?) & continuing onto the countertops. A good rule if thumb is to not have more than 3 small appliances on your counters ~ you do not want buyers to think that there is not enough storage. And, loose the fridge art when selling.

I am going to go on a little rant ~ there are a lot of bad MLS pictures out there that should not be. It just requires the person on the other side of the lens put a little thought into the final product. For instance, in addition to all the personal clutter, in this picture your eye is drawn in several directions that have nothing to do with the home like the trash can & water cooler. The table & chairs are also in the way ~ in fact one of the chairs appears to be blocking the dishwasher. And, that’s the point ~ you want your pictures to NOT be confusing to potential buyers. It would have taken no effort to remove these items for the picture. And, sometimes just a slight adjustment in the angle of a shot makes all the difference in the world. That window is a selling feature, so I would have aimed the camera slightly to the right to get all of it into the picture.

When you are selling your home, you are presenting the public a product & products need to be merchandised ~ especially in the buyers market we are currently experiencing. So, detach or dis-associate, de-clutter & de-personalize. Or, call in a stager ~ it will be money well spent.

The Craig Van Den Brulle furniture store is located in the Nolita section of Manhattan. In 1997 Craig opened Capital Furnishings which quickly became a destination for New York’s most influential designers & collectors. In 2007, he relocated to a much larger location 1 block away & renamed the business. Craig also designs a 12 piece line of lucite tables & lamps ~ the VDB Collection.

At the height of its popularity in the late 60s, lucite furniture was considered to be fun, but not forever, due to its propensity for scratching. That is no longer true due to a product called Novus which now makes lucite a viable furniture option again.

Chandelier Magic is a husband & wife team from California living in a small beach cottage. From their studio, they refurbish & create their amazing & unique one-of-kind lighting. In their own words ~
